Tomorrow will be the release of Civilization VII, the latest version of the video game series that has been tempting players with “one more turn” for over 30 years. In fact, certain users who pre-ordered the game got early access in case you were wondering if friends disappeared from online spaces and social gatherings. They almost certainly missed the Superb Owl this past Sunday.
I have played all the versions of Civilization over the decades — though I did see the Chiefs routed by the Eagles, sorry Chiefs fans. For non-sportsball fans, imagine how the eagles and Beorn whomped the goblins in the Battle of the Five Armies. Everyone gets Tolkien references, right?
Anyway, I’ve enjoyed the ever-evolving Civ game series, even as each new incarnation’s changes can be a puzzler at first. It took me ages to get used to districts in Civ VI, though at this point, my family knows when I fire up the game thanks to its signature theme song.
Gamers know well how much top video games are huge productions these days and music plays a big part in so many productions. And by big, I mean full-on orchestras and corresponding choruses.
So in prepping for the impending release, I came across the video below which reminded me of the obvious: the lyrics mean something… and, they’re delightfully geeky for history buffs and wonderfully thematic to the game. Observe the subtitled version of the Civ VII theme, entitled “Live Gloriously:”
Many of you may want to learn more about the composer Christopher Tin, who also did the music for Civ VI and, as I needed to be reminded, the Grammy-winning theme for Civ IV. Hey, it’s been a minute. But once one realizes that, this latest theme, going from Ancient Greek to Old English to K’iche’ to Sanskrit makes sense: the theme is evolving with the game as well.
Definitely check it out before you set out to do some great thing.
