Statistically speaking, some of you made some new year’s resolutions regarding writing, but what if you’re finding that difficult?
Dennis Palumbo is a screenwriter-turned-therapist I’ve referenced before on this blog (see this one about getting notes on your script and this interview with veteran screenwriter Ken Levine).
Well, there’s three more articles I can share, ones he wrote for the Psychiatric Times last fall — and ones that might help writers figure out their author motivation… or lack thereof:
- “Writers’ Block is Good News!”
- He goes through the origins of the phrase and common attitudes arising from the situation, with the bottom line being writers’ block is something that can be worked through. Also worth it for the notion of the urge to create being “… a curse you’ve been blessed with, or a blessing you’ve been cursed with.”
- “Shame Is a Deep Well”
- A great exploration of the thought processes that may lie behind procrastination.
- “Fail Better”
- A nice meditation on how and why you need to give yourself permission to fail.
I don’t know if there will be more articles in this series, but ideally this will give some of you thoughts of how to approach what may currently seem insurmountable.
